Gas Gathering

Gas Gathering operations typically require compression to either sustain the wells and to move the raw gas to a processing plant. Near the well head, condensate and water are stripped from the raw gas. Land based fields typically collect the condensate in tanks which are then periodically hauled to oil refineries by truck. Well head, upstream compression duty is typically accomplished with relatively small horsepower reciprocating gas engines driving integral compressor or separable frame type compressors.  As various streams are combined and flows increase, compression horsepower increases proportionally.  UCG has significant experience with providing new and retrofit controls system for reciprocating engine / compressor packages in greater than approximately 3,000 bhp.

Gas Processing

Gas Processing is the generic term for the complex process of taking raw gas from the gathering wells, then stripping liquids and conditioning the gas for further downstream use.  A typical plant will strip out acid gases, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and NGL. The resulting natural gas is compressed and sent via pipeline for sales gas and /or to fractionation trains for further processing into various hydrocarbons by molecular weight. All the various streams, C2, C3, C4, etc.  have commercial uses.   Compression requirements at the plants are typically achieved with reciprocating compressors driven either by electric motors or gas engines. Gas Transmission

Gas Transmission, the industry has evolved greatly during the last century. As demand increased during the industrial growth, pipelines up to 36 inches in diameter were being constructed in the Americas, Europe and Asia.  A typical, single TransCanada compressor station may have up to six turbine driven pipeline compressor trains, each approximately 30 to 40,000 bhp.   Booster Compressors or Pipeliners as they are referred to, achieve efficiencies greater than 90%.  Compressor stations are located every 70 to 100 miles along the pipeline maintaining or boosting the pressure along the way. Large trunk lines, such as those operated by TransCanada, British Gas and Gazprom, transport gas across countries and continents from remote onshore and offshore gas fields to regional distribution networks.  Local distribution networks deliver the gas to power plants, factories, refineries and residential users.  Just as the compression equipment and the drivers continually improve through diligent engineering effort, their associated control systems make even greater advances as the automation industry continually evolves.  UCG expertise and product upgrades have been utilized by major equipment OEMs and end users worldwide.

Gas Storage / Withdrawal

Gas Storage / Withdrawal applications involve the process of maintaining the supply and demand of natural gas in balance. Globally, companies in the business of supplying gas to the end users are faced with fluctuating demand. Winter demands peak in the northern climates when temperatures dip and the natural gas for home heat spikes. The reverse takes place in summer when air conditioning demand peak, which translates into peak power plant demand.  In order to accommodate this rapidly changing demand, storage and withdrawal of natural gas is continually managed. Storage is achieved by injecting gas at high pressure into underground geological formations. Access gas is stored during low demand periods and withdrew during peak demand periods.  The compression requirements are achieved by either reciprocating or centrifugal compressors, engine or motor driven.  Follow the Link to read about a United Controls Group Case Study. Stogit Case Study click here

Oil & Gas Production

Oil & Gas Production, by conventional definition, is the process followed after drilling of a well. The process of bringing hydrocarbons to the surface and their preparation for further processing falls in this category of production.  Horsepower for compression is needed throughout the process; whether the reinjection of gas or pumping water into the well to stimulate the flow of oil, or transporting the gas condensate to a processing plant.  Electric motors, gas and diesel engines, and gas turbines all are utilized to provide the needed horsepower.  The United Controls Group understands this equipment and are experts at designing and manufacturing control systems for equipment and station control.

Power Generation

Power Generation in the Oil & Gas sector mitigates the cost of purchasing power from a public utility to sustain the operation. Offshore production is inherently isolated from a grid, thus local power production is a necessity for personnel and equipment operation. Typically, gas turbines, which offer high power to weight ratio, are the preferred drivers for the generation package. Land based refineries and gas plants often use the gas being processed as fuel gas for engine–generator sets. UCG is often called upon to supply current state of the art control systems for generator packages both on and offshore. Our experience includes engine and turbine driven generator controls.
